L’Associazione Italiana Registri Tumori (AIRTUM)
- was born in Florence in 1996 with the aim of promoting, coordinating and supporting cancer registration in Italy. The non-profit association aims to act in the field of social and health care with the aim of making available to the administrative authorities, the bodies of the National Health Service and the scientific community, the data on the frequency of tumors , in the interest of research, prevention, care planning, facilitation of access to care and assessment of their effectiveness.
AIRTUM also aims to standardize recording techniques and encourage joint data analysis and to contribute, based on scientific expertise, to the planning of new registration initiatives and their evaluation.
Since its establishment AIRTUM operates through the Commissions, that is work groups that operate in permanent activity sectors and that guarantee experience and competence for a multidisciplinary operational continuity. Through the Commissions AIRTUM follows the accreditation process of the Associated Cancer Registries, contributes to the expansion and updating of the national database, ensures constant training of operators with seminars, conferences and conferences.
But AIRTUM also encourages and promotes studies and research, collaborates with organizations, organizations, institutions and national and international foundations that pursue similar goals; performs publishing and distribution of scientific publications; stipulates agreements with public bodies to directly or indirectly support the activities of researchers working at the RTs.
The Association pursues its own recognition as representative of the common scientific and organizational interests of the Cancer Registries in national and international bodies and in particular at the WHO, the IACR and the IARC, the ENCR, the Ministry of Health and the Higher Institute of Health.
Furthermore, AIRTUM actively collaborates with AIOM (Italian Association of Medical Oncology) with an annual monograph (I numbers of Cancer in Italy); but there is also a fruitful collaboration with AIE (Italian Association of Epidemiology), SIE (Italian Society of Hematology), SIAPEC (Italian Society of Pathological Anatomy and Diagnostic Cytology), SITI (Italian Society of Hygiene) and with Patient Associations (Foundation AIOM, FAVO, Health Woman, Europe Woman). In addition, the AIRTUM has published several manuals aimed at operators of cancer registries. All the publications produced are freely available on this site.
The AIRTUM is administered by a Board of Directors which remains in office for three years and which appoints the President, the Treasurer and identifies the Heads of the Commissions. Joint meetings between the Board of Directors and the members of the work committees, or with the directors of the Registries are held several times a year: these meetings represent an instrument of stimulus and moment of exchange of information also on particular local situations. The AIRTUM Website Working Group is responsible for updating the site and publishing the news that are sent to the members.
